The introduction

Western Districts Hockey is a social, non-profit hockey club in Avondale, Auckland. As a club that's struggled for money and support for many years, we saw an opportunity to raise their profile while simultaneously exploring new and creative avenues to do more with less. So, how did it go?

The Challenge

When a sport begins to be treated semi-professionally, there's always a disconnection between players and coaches expecting to be paid, and the community now being expected to pay to watch. Western Districts Hockey are a family and community-based club focused on helping players reach their potential, but they're not blessed with the backing of big money. The challenge, then, is how can we do more with less?

The Plan

Western Districts needed to change from just a hockey club that had players in all ages and stages, to a community focused on putting players (and coaches, umpires, volunteers etc) first. Shifting the dynamic by showing greater respect, support and commitment to their members would help bulid a sports brand that went beyond just hockey and into community and mutual understanding.

The Delivery

An update to the website to make the new goals clear. Reimagined communications focusing on what the club could offer players and how this would allow them to succeed on their hockey journey. The creation and running of unique events and camps to give their members (and prospective members) things not on offer elsewhere all focused the new message that 'Western is here for you'.
